What the Ocean Taught Us: Reflections from the Self-Care Retreat in Topsail

In May, I had the honour of co-hosting a beautiful self-care retreat on the serene shores of Topsail, North Carolina, and it was nothing short of transformational. Surrounded by the calming rhythm of the ocean, a group of people came together not to “fix” themselves, but to reconnect. To breathe. To rest. To simply be.

There was no rush. No pressure. Just space to listen to our bodies, honour our needs, and explore what self-care truly looks like when it’s not just squeezed into the margins of our busy lives. We moved. We laughed. We cried. We nourished our bodies with good food and our hearts with good conversation. We re-learned how to slow down, how to soften, and how to receive. Because self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential. It’s the foundation we build everything else upon.

It was more than relaxation. It was a reclamation our self-worth, love, joy, rest and being present.

Why Self-Care Matters

In a culture that glorifies hustle and productivity, self-care is often seen as a luxury. But here’s the truth:

You can’t pour from an empty cup.
You can’t serve others if you’re disconnected from yourself.
You deserve to feel whole, not just functional.

Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and face masks. It’s boundaries. It’s deep rest. It’s saying no when your soul is crying for space. It’s investing in your wellbeing before burnout forces you to.

Self-Reflection Prompt:

What is my body & mind truly asking for right now, and how can I give myself permission to receive it?
