Christmas Day often arrives carrying many layers. Joy, gratitude, relief, sadness, exhaustion, love, disappointment – sometimes all at once. There can be an unspoken expectation that today should feel a certain way. That we should be happy. Present. Thankful. Together.
But the truth is, Christmas doesn’t land the same for everyone.
In my book, I speak often about releasing the pressure to perform emotionally and instead allowing ourselves to simply be with what is true.
“The more I sat with the issues and didn’t push them away, the more I was learning to emotionally rebalance myself.”
Being, rather than doing, is an unfamiliar practice for many of us. We are conditioned to fill space, manage others’ emotions, and keep things moving. Stillness can feel uncomfortable, even unsettling. Yet it is often in these quiet moments that the body finally feels safe enough to speak.
Christmas Day invites a different rhythm. A slower breath. A gentler pace. A permission to stop striving.
You may find yourself surrounded by people, yet feeling alone. Or alone, yet deeply connected. You may feel grateful for what is here while grieving what isn’t. None of this needs fixing. All of it belongs.
“Amongst the chaos of the day, if we spent more time in silence and feeling the pain – the anxiety, the worry, the fearfulness – it eventually passes.”
If you can, allow yourself a few minutes of stillness today. No phone. No agenda. Just you and your breath. Let the nervous system settle. Let the body catch up with the year it has lived.
Reflection moment
Take a pause and gently ask yourself:
-What would it be like to allow this feeling without judging it?
-What am I feeling right now – beneath the surface?
-Where do I notice this in my body?
There is no right answer. The practice is in the noticing.
Today is not about doing Christmas perfectly. It’s about meeting yourself honestly, with kindness.
Much love & light
